Second IIPS Student Arrested for Criticising Ram Temple Event, One Month After Initial Arrest

Another student from the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) has been arrested by the Govandi police station in Mumbai, about a month after the initial arrest of a Dalit student for allegedly posting a WhatsApp story protesting the celebration of the Ayodhya Ram Temple consecration on January 22. This recent arrest, which occurred on February 21, was confirmed by fellow students of IIPS.

The newly arrested individual is a 25-year-old student hailing from Kerala. The preceding arrest took place on January 22 when a 23-year-old Dalit student from Maharashtra, who shared a screenshot of the aforementioned student's post, was apprehended by the police. The latter student was subsequently released on bail after spending two days in custody.

The police have pressed charges under sections 153(A) and 295(A) of the Indian Penal Code against the arrested individuals, which pertain to promoting enmity between groups and outraging religious sentiments, respectively.
